Development of Ahwatukee started in 1970, when Presley Development Firm, led by Randall Presley, acquired 2,080 acres (840 ha) of land. The land consisted of Ahwatukee Ranch, owned by a land syndicated owned by a professor at Arizona State College English. It also included land belonging to a local moving and storage company. Initially, Presley wanted the location to be a retirement. Later he created a mix of retired life living, family members living, and light industrial zoning for this area.
